The holiday season is upon us, which means sleigh-loads full of Christmas-related lessons but no time to plan. And it’s also where this week’s free download, digital Spanish Christmas bingo, is here to save the day.

Normally, bingo is a major hit for my students. But this year, AKA COVID-Christmas, has forced us to be creative about how we go about pretty much everything.

This version of Spanish Christmas Bingo allows you to play online with your entire class by using Google Slides and Google Classroom. However, if you teach in-person and have access to tablets, this freebie can also work for you.

You can get the free Digital Spanish Christmas Bingo download below.

Download the Google Drive File

First things first, download the Spanish Christmas Bingo file available below and save a copy to your Google Drive.

Then, head over to Google Classroom.

Select Classwork > Create > Assignment. Next, enter a title for the assignment. Something like “Spanish Christmas Bingo” or “Bingo de Navidad” work fine. Just keep in mind, if you don’t add a title, Google Classroom won’t let you add a new assignment.

Click Add > Google Drive, choose the Digital Spanish Christmas Bingo file saved to your Google Drive, and select “Insert.”

Finally, choose “Make a copy for each student” from the dropdown menu before you hit “Assign.” This ensures that each student can manipulate the pieces on their own file without affecting anyone else’s game board.

How to Play

Before starting, assign each student a different game board. You can use the slide number or the game board number, which are different. Please make sure you and your students are clear on which number you are referring to.

Once everyone has a game board, use the list of Spanish Christmas vocabulary words below.

In order to keep track of the words you’ve called, there’s a slide (slide five) with all of the vocabulary. As you call each word, move the image from the “vocabulario” side to the “vocabulario utilizado” side.

Students are able to move the black game pieces on the slides to cover each vocabulary word as you call it.

Finally, determine what students have to do to win. While the winning student can say (or type) “Bingo!” you can also have them say a phrase in Spanish, like “feliz navidad” or “felices fiestas,”  or sing a phrase from a Spanish villancico.

Ways to Play

How students win is up to you, but a few versions of the game are as follows.

  • Four in a Row – The traditional way of winning, where the first student to get four words in a row (vertically, horizontally, or diagonally) wins.
  • Four Corners – The first student to have a word in each of the four corners of their game board wins.
  • Describe the Word – Instead of saying a vocabulary word, you could describe it. This works on listening comprehension as students need to understand your definition in order to guess the word correctly.
  • Student as the teacher – Have the winning student call the vocabulary words for the next round.
